Prepare for Summer Construction Projects

Summer is the most common season for construction projects to be completed, but the summer months bring several challenges that contractors need to consider. Heat can affect both the safety of workers and the efficiency of construction equipment and materials. Before committing to a project, it is important to consider all aspects, including the weather. PlanHub can help you factor in weather and safety precautions at the very start of your project.

Employee Safety and Productivity

Standing in the sun all day during hot, sticky summer days can take its toll on construction workers’ safety, so it is important to take precautions to stay cool.

  • Drink plenty of water. First and foremost, employees need to be sure to drink an adequate amount of water. Dehydration is the most common cause of heat-related health issues, so employees who spend most of their days in the heat should be drinking water every 15-20 minutes.
  • Take breaks. Construction workers should take periodic breaks from the sun by moving to natural shade, a tent, or a building to get away from the heat.
  • Get acclimated. Workers should gradually increase their workload during their first week of work in order to acclimate to the warm weather.
  • Take advantage of cooler temperatures. Schedule the harder physical work during morning and evening hours when the temperatures are cooler, rather than midday when temperatures are at their highest.

Employees that are allowed to take care of their bodies properly during the heat stay healthy and are able to work more productively.

Effects of Heat on Equipment and Materials

Extreme heat can also wreak havoc on construction equipment. Equipment should be moved out of the sun whenever possible to prevent overheated engines and other vehicle problems.
A little bit of planning can go a long way towards keeping employees safe and productivity levels up. At PlanHub, we are committed to helping contractors succeed during the hot summer months. Contact us today to start planning your summer construction project.
